Abolish the "no pets" rule for private rented accommodation.

The Issue

Thousands of UK residents are forced to make the gut-wrenching decision to part with a beloved pet, whom they consider a member of their family, in order to find rental housing that meets their needs. Only a small % of landlords accept tenants with pets.

The situation is devastating, not only to the families who find themselves unable to keep their pets, but for the animals themselves. In the months surrounding moving day, the number of animals abandoned at rescue centres nearly triples, from around 600 a month to approximately 1,600.

Currently, the law allows landlords to penalize all pet owners who are looking for affordable rental housing, regardless of how their animals actually behave. This unfairly favors landlords’ rights over tenants’ rights. Responsible pet owners whose animals are well behaved should be allowed to keep them

The renting sector is seeing an increase with more and more people finding it harder to own their own home or being evicted and with the no-pet clause more and more people are either giving up their animals (so we see an increase at the rescue centres) or are choosing to live in accommodation that is beyond their means simply to keep their pets, this is wrong, not only to our animals but also to us. The no-pet clauses in residential leases are unreasonable, abusive, and contrary to public order.

France, Belgium, and Ontario have all declared no pet clauses null and void. In Belgium, this came about following a court’s finding that no-pet clauses infringe tenants’ fundamental rights to privacy and to inviolability of the home.

So why, in the nation that claim to be the most pet loving, do we still have this clause?

It time to change it!! Please sign the petition and remove the no-pets clause from all tenancy agreements.

And Please please remember to share with everyone, friends, family, groups, Facebook and X (formally twitter ) lets get this out there and save our pets!!!
