The Issue

Growing up in Canada, I’ve always believed in the values of independence and self-governance. Yet, despite our progressive strides, Canada remains tethered to an outdated institution— the British monarchy. The symbolic presence of the monarchy stifles our growth towards true autonomy. We, as a nation, owe it to ourselves to evolve beyond the shadow of British rule.

Canada has been an independent nation since 1867, yet we still recognize a foreign monarch as our head of state. It's 2023, and we must take steps to ensure complete independence. Entrusting our national identity and governance to a monarchy thousands of miles away undermines our sovereignty. A modern, democratic nation should uphold its own citizens as heads of state, not distant royals.

More than 60% of Canadians believe that the modern-day monarchy is irrelevant to their lives, according to a survey by the Historica Canada (2021). This outdated system fails to reflect Canada's multicultural and inclusive identity. For generations, indigenous communities have been advocating for reconciliation, part of which includes redefining our governance structures to reflect a truly independent nation.

To move forward, Canada should initiate a national referendum, allowing Canadians to decide whether or not to remove the monarchy as our head of state. This democratic process empowers the Canadian population, giving us the right to shape our nation's future.

It's time for Canada to stand on its own two feet and fully embrace the independence we cherished over a century ago from British rule. Let’s honor our diverse culture, values, and aspirations by severing ties with the British monarchy. Join me in calling for a future where we define our sovereignty.

Petition to Abolish the British Monarchy in Canada

To: The House of Commons and the Government of Canada

We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, call upon our elected representatives to take immediate and concrete steps to remove the British monarchy as our head of state and establish a fully independent, democratic Canadian republic.

Canada is a sovereign, multicultural, and democratic nation that has matured beyond the need for symbolic ties to a colonial institution. The continued presence of the British monarchy in our constitutional framework does not reflect the values of equality, self-determination, and inclusivity that define modern Canada.

Our system should be accountable to Canadians alone—not to a hereditary institution rooted in a distant nation's aristocracy. This outdated structure undermines the principle of democratic representation and hinders our full national autonomy.

We urge Parliament to initiate a national conversation, including consultations with Indigenous nations, provinces, and the general public, on creating a homegrown Canadian head of state—one who is selected by Canadians and accountable to them.

It is time for Canada to take full control of its future. Let us respectfully and firmly end the symbolic reign of the British crown over Canadian affairs.

Sincerely,
