Every year, my family and I embark on a cherished journey across Europe in our motorhome—a tradition that would be incomplete without the company of our two beloved dogs. But what was once a joyful pilgrimage has now turned into an annual financial strain, courtesy of the Animal Health Certificate (AHC). We are forced to spend an exorbitant £295 every year for our pets to accompany us on two trips.

The introduction of the AHC has significantly hiked the costs of traveling with pets to the EU. With an average price tag of £150 for just four months of validity, the AHC pales in comparison to the old Pet Passport, which was more efficient, less costly at approximately £70, and valid for three years. Our European counterparts continue to enjoy this benefit, yet as British citizens, we are subjected to these inflated and unnecessary expenses.

This new regulation is costing pet lovers across the UK dearly, without providing any tangible benefits. The requirements of a rabies vaccine remain the same under both systems, meaning our pets are just as safe and protected with the Pet Passport as they are with the AHC. This situation presents a frustrating and unjust challenge that feels more like a cash grab than a genuine protective measure.

Reinstating the Pet Passport not only makes financial sense but also brings a sense of fairness and ease to British pet owners. It respects our right to travel freely with our pets, without being burdened by excessive costs and redundant bureaucracy.

We call on the UK government to acknowledge the financial strain this places on its citizens, and to rectify this by abolishing the current AHC requirement and reinstating the efficient, equitable Pet Passport system. By doing so, you will be restoring progress and common sense to our pet travel policies.
