Abolish the 2-Year Rule for No-Fault Employment Termination
The Issue
This is a cry for justice. Someone close to me was abruptly terminated from their job, given no notice nor any reason as to why. They were one of their top performing employees, yet found themself out of work, with no explanation offered.
When we sought answers, we were met with a harsh reality. Under existing regulations, employers can legally withhold a reason for dismissal if the employee has been there for less than 2 years.
Whilst we do believe that employers have a right to dismiss a member of staff for whatever reason they see fit, we believe that unless the employee is still in a probation period, they should be given a reason for their dismissal.
We discovered that this oppressive rule affects many. In 2019, the Office for National Statistics reported that 1.5 million people had been in their current job for less than a year, leaving them at risk of unexplained dismissal under this rule. We believe this is an unfair practice that undermines job security and shields employers from accountability.
We must lobby our leaders to abolish this 2-year rule for no fault employment terminations so no one else has to experience what I've witnessed. This change will foster transparency and equality in the workspace, promoting a fair and thriving labour market where every worker's rights are protected.
Sign this petition and together, let's advocate for a more fair and equitable workplace where all employees have the right to understand their dismissal, regardless of the length of their tenure.
