As a student at Stahl Junior High School in Puyallup, WA, this issue is important to me as a young woman who does not want my body to be dictated by policies that seem outdated and biased.

The new dress code at Stahl Junior High has been perceived as discriminatory, primarily affecting female students by creating unnecessary restrictions on our clothing choices. It is important to note that such rules  may not only undermine the confidence and individuality of young girls but also undermine the Puyallup School District's own code of conduct, which emphasizes equality and non-discrimination.

Statistics have shown that dress codes target female students, often leading to body shaming and reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes. According to the National Women's Law Center, dress codes aimed at girls tend to be more restrictive, which affects their self-esteem and academic performance.

Instead of promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment, the current dress code at Stahl Junior High risks perpetuating gender inequity and discomfort among students. It is critical to re-evaluate these policies to ensure that they align with modern values of gender equality and student empowerment.

I urge the administration at Stahl Junior High and the Puyallup School District to revisit this dress code policy. Consider involving students and parents in the discussion to ensure that the rules reflect a fair and supportive environment that respects the individuality and freedom of expression of all students.
