The issue

The issue of circuses using wild animals is very complex and includes  cruel and archaic training methods such as brutality, deprivation, the use of whips, electric goads, chains and spikes. These animals also suffer greatly being transported over long distances in small cages or tethered, often subjected to extremes in temperatures.

The practise of using animals in circuses where they are unable to express their natural instincts and behaviours is not consistent with current trends in environmental awareness. These magnificent animals should not be confined to these barbaric conditions for the sole purpose of human entertainment. The sad reality of circus life means that these animals spend their lives frustrated in cages or permanently tethered when not performing. It is WRONG to encourage the message to children that it is acceptable to view these animals as objects of amusement, forced to perform degrading tricks for humans, instead of sending the correct message that these animals are to be respected as part of our planet's conservation and heritage.

Subjecting naturally free-roaming wild animals to brutal training for circus tricks amounts to tormenting animals for human amusement and serves no educational purpose.

Many countries around the world have legislated nation-wide bans on all circuses that contain wild animals due to a growing awareness of the ethical and humane treatment of animals. It is time for Australia to join the ranks of this progressive new approach in environmental awareness and conservation

There are many Australians opposed to this archaic practise but unless permits for this activity are abolished, this hideous form of animal cruelty will continue to be a blight on Australian society.
