Abolish Parliamentary Privileges, Specifically Freedom from Arrest

Abolish Parliamentary Privileges, Specifically Freedom from Arrest
The Issue
Do you believe everyone should be held accountable for their actions, rich or poor?
As a concerned citizen, my conviction in the necessity of this petition is rooted in the reality that some politicians use their privileges to avoid consequences for dishonest and fraudulent actions. These actions corrode the integrity of our government as greed and corruption infiltrate the ranks. The unchecked privileges of politicians provide a breeding ground for these damaging behaviors. One such privilege is the freedom from arrest, an outdated rule that shelters politicians from facing the music for their wrongdoings, a provision originally conceived in a time and context not reflective of our present day democracy.
Data from Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index reveals a troubling correlation between perceived political corruption and a lack of checks and balances in government (Transparency International, 2018). It is therefore essential to reconsider and reform the privileges extended to those in power. The article 'The Effect of Political Regimes on Corruption' published in the journal 'Economic Modelling' went a step further to indicate that increased accountability and decreased immunities in political offices directly impact the reduction of corruption (Petreski et al., 2017).
The world needs politicians who can operate without the shield of immunity, to keep our governing bodies honest and transparent. We hereby demand the revision of parliamentary privileges, with the provision of freedom from arrest at the top of the list to be abolished. This reform would be a huge step forward in keeping our politicians accountable for their actions. Sign this petition and lend your voice to stand against uncontrolled political privileges. Your signature can make a big difference. Let's carve the path for a more robust, accountable, and transparent political system.
