Abolish Mental Age Theory and Free Josh Standish from A Cruel Institution

Abolish Mental Age Theory and Free Josh Standish from A Cruel Institution
The Issue
Joshua Standish, a bright 21-year-old with dreams like any other young adult, is trapped in a situation far removed from the life he desires and deserves. Joshua, like thousands of others in the UK, is confined to a hospital inpatient unit in Hull due to severe learning disabilities and autism. He is held in solitary confinement and drugged against his will.
For someone who dreams of going to university, learning to read and write, opening a bike shop, and leading an independent life, being trapped in a facility is disheartening and unjust.
Currently, more than 2,000 people with learning disabilities and autism are detained in inpatient units in England. https://www.itv.com/news/2025-07-14/familys-hurt-as-thousands-with-learning-disabilities-locked-up
NHS figures show 40 per cent of those people do not need to be there.
The current system, perpetuated by outdated mindsets such as Mental Age Theory, denies individuals like Joshua the opportunity to live a normal life. This theory attributes a "mental age" to individuals with learning disabilities without acknowledging their chronological age and actual potential, thus curbing their aspirations and restricting their freedom.
It's imperative that we understand and value neurodiversity, promoting an approach that recognizes and supports every individual's unique needs and dreams, irrespective of their disabilities.
Joshua is passionate about cycling and craves opportunities for education and work. But his potential is stifled by a system that fails to see beyond his disabilities. By abolishing the institutions and Mental Age Theory, we can allow individuals like Joshua the freedom to pursue their dreams, gain education, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Josh's story is a microcosm of the larger issue affecting thousands in the UK. These are people who wish to be integrated into society but are constrained by systemic barriers rooted in outdated theories. Abolishing institutions and Mental Age Theory will not only free Joshua but symbolize a much-needed shift towards embracing neurodiversity. Let's ensure Joshua, along with others, receives the support to lead a fulfilling life reflective of their aspirations and age.
