Abolish Mandatory Electronic Log Books for Truck Drivers

The Issue

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is imposing electronic log books (elogs) on truck drivers, and it's clear that these systems don't work for everyone. Many of us in the trucking industry have spent years behind the wheel, and we understand that the one-size-fits-all approach of elogs is deeply flawed. While they may benefit some, a universal mandate does more harm than good, turning what should be a choice into a decree.

The trucking industry is complex and varies from region to region, from driver to driver. Elogs are an oversimplified solution imposed from the outside, without considering the intricacies and realities that seasoned drivers face daily. Forcing this technology upon us only serves to complicate our work and infringes on our ability to manage our schedules effectively. Moreover, they impose on our flexibility, restricting how we manage driving hours, breaks, and rest times according to unique day-to-day circumstances, which paper logs allow us to navigate more fluidly.

This digital control not only jeopardizes the livelihood of practical drivers but also raises concerns over privacy and the constant surveillance drivers are subjected to. The effectiveness of keeping drivers safe isn't in tracking them every minute, but in trusting their accumulated experience and judgment.

According to the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, numerous drivers have reported decreased job satisfaction and increased stress due to electronic logging devices (ELDs) being mandated. Rather than increasing safety, these devices often lead to rushed driving as drivers attempt to beat arbitrary time constraints, ironically making the roads less safe.

We propose that electronic log books should be voluntary, offering flexibility for those who find them helpful, while allowing traditional methods for drivers who find them more efficient. This change will not only respect the drivers' insights and experience but also honor the diversity within the trucking industry.

Your support is crucial in advocating for this necessary change. Sign the petition to urge the FMCSA to make elogs optional and not obligatory, respecting the rights and expertise of truck drivers across the nation.
