Abolish Mandatory Assignment of Homework in Schools

Abolish Mandatory Assignment of Homework in Schools

The Issue

I'm an individual who personally feels the negative impact of excessive homework on daily life. Like many students, the burden of continuous assignments is taking its toll on my mental and physical well-being. Homework, a practice adapted for centuries in the education system, has now become a matter of concern due to its overwhelming pressure on students.

Numerous studies show that excessive homework can lead to stress, physical health issues and in some cases, even a loss of interest in education. For instance, the American Journal of Family Therapy, in one of its research reveals that high school students who receive excessive homework, of more than two hours per night, experience more academic stress and physical health issues (Cooper, 1989). Besides, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development found that 15-year-old students who do more than seven hours of homework per week, didn't fare any better in their PISA tests.

Education should focus on fostering creative thinking, instead of monotonous homework tasks. Scrapping homework won't mean the end of learning. On the contrary, it will encourage independent learning, creativity, and critical thinking. By eradicating homework, schools can help students gain the right amount of rest which is equally important for a growing child.

We urge the education authorities to reconsider and alter their policies regarding the volume of homework assigned. With this petition, we are not asking to eliminate learning, rather we seek to abolish the obsolete practice of assigning excessive homework, which is more detrimental than beneficial to students.
