Abolish Low Emission Zones in Glasgow

The Issue

The introduction of Low Emission Zones (LEZs) in Glasgow was a measure intended to minimize environmental impact and promote healthier air quality for its residents. However, the unintended consequences of this policy have led to significant issues that cannot be ignored. Traffic congestion on the M8 motorway has reached unprecedented levels, resulting in excessive gridlock and delays which not only frustrate commuters but also inflate travel times unnecessarily.

Moreover, the current state of public transportation in Glasgow is inadequate, with a distinct lack of affordable and local options available for residents. This situation disproportionately affects those who rely on public transport to fulfill their daily needs, pushing them to bear additional financial burdens or to seek alternative transport that may not be environmentally friendly.

Meanwhile, it seems there is a stark contrast in the treatment of commercial and developer traffic. This disparity not only undermines the core intention of the LEZ policy but also contributes to economic strain on local small businesses. Many such businesses, integral to Glasgow’s community fabric, are facing closure due to logistical challenges and reduced customer access.

The city needs an approach that balances environmental goals with the economic vitality of its people and businesses. Glasgow must reconsider the implementation of LEZs, investigating adaptive measures that can promote air quality without stifling local commerce or inconveniencing its citizens.

Supporting this initiative will help foster a reasonable and balanced framework that works for everyone. Sign this petition to advocate for the removal of LEZs in Glasgow, and work towards realistic and supportive environmental policies that benefit all of Glasgow’s residents and businesses alike.
