Abolish June 16 as the Day of the African Child and Create a National Remembrance Day.
The Issue
As a coalition of civil society organizations, we urge the Government of Sierra Leone to abolish the official commemoration of June 16 as the Day of the African Child and establish a National Day of Remembrance for children affected by our eleven-year civil war and other national tragedies. Thousands of Sierra Leonean children were killed, displaced, orphaned, or traumatized, yet they lack a dedicated day of recognition. While we respect the historical significance of the Soweto Uprising, Sierra Leone should prioritize its own history and sacrifices. We call for a commemorative day that honours our children, promotes healing, preserves national memory, and educates future generations.
