The Issue

The Grand National and similar horse racing events represent a tradition that many consider exciting and prestigious. However, behind the glamour and the adrenaline, there lies a darker reality of cruelty and unnecessary suffering. Every year, numerous horses suffer severe injuries and even death due to the dangerous nature of these events. Statistics from animal welfare organizations report that over 80 horses have died in the Grand National since its inception due to the challenging course and high fences.

Horse racing pushes these majestic creatures to their limits, often imposing an unnatural and grueling pace that leads to exhaustion, injuries, and in worst cases, fatalities. The issue isn’t limited to just one event; it represents a broader culture within horse racing where animal welfare is frequently compromised for entertainment and profit.

Moreover, the training methods and the living conditions for many of these racehorses are far from ideal. They endure routine stress and often face an uncertain future once their racing days are over. The broader industry profits while these animals pay the actual price.

Many countries and jurisdictions across the world are taking steps to reform or ban such practices due to growing public concern over animal rights. For example, in 2020, California implemented stricter safety standards for horse racing which significantly reduced horse fatalities on tracks.

We have an opportunity to lead by example in advocating for humane treatment of animals and promoting forms of entertainment that do not involve exploitation. Alternatives to horse racing can be encouraged, such as simulated racing events, which can provide thrill without harm.

Ending events like the Grand National is not only a moral imperative but also reflects an evolving understanding of our responsibilities towards all living beings. To bring about meaningful change, we need to raise our voice and demand action from event organizers, sponsors, and the governing bodies of horse racing.

Sign this petition to urge authorities to abolish the Grand National and push for more compassionate and cruelty-free entertainment options. Let’s work together to protect these magnificent animals and ensure a more ethical future for sports and entertainment.
