We are calling on the City Council of Toronto, ON, Canada to cancel the double land transfer tax if property taxes are increased. This double burden is unjust and places undue financial stress on homeowners in our city. In 2020 alone, Toronto collected over $800 million from municipal land transfer taxes (source: City of Toronto Budget). If property taxes increase as proposed, homeowners will be doubly penalized. This is not only unfair but also unsustainable for many residents who are already grappling with the high cost of living in one of Canada's most expensive cities. We urge our city leaders to consider the financial strain this places on citizens and abolish the double land transfer tax amidst any increase in property taxes.
