Abolish caning in Singapore as a penalty

The Issue

In schools and in the legal system, those who commit even non violent offenses like vandalism can be liable to caning. This is problematic due to multiple reasons. First, it is a form of gender discrimination as only males can be caned. Next, caning does not address the root cause of the offence. Additionally, it does not reflect well given that Singapore is a developed country but it is one of the only developed countries in the world that still practices caning as of 2026. Lastly, it causes physical injury which is harm the entire legal system is built to minimise. Please vote for this petition due to the multiple issues that caning brings about.
