Abolish Bay City, MI Bridge Tolls Hindering Local Economies and Residents
Abolish Bay City, MI Bridge Tolls Hindering Local Economies and Residents
The Issue
I am a resident and small business owner deeply affected by the falling economy, largely a result of the heavily imposed bridge tolls in our community. While these tolls may have been installed initially to fund maintenance and infrastructure, they have since created an unprecedented economic strain on small businesses and residents alike.
According to the American Society of Civil Engineers 2021 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, tolling generates about $20 billion annually throughout the U.S. However, it also dramatically affects the livelihoods of millions who struggle to shoulder these daily costs. For local businesses, these extra costs put a strain on supply chains, affecting both the businesses and the consumer.
Moreover, studies have shown a correlation between high tolls and increased cost of living. A survey by the American Automobile Association (AAA) revealed that approximately three out of every ten drivers (29%) can’t afford tolls without sacrificing other necessities. The situation has made everyday commuting for work and basic errands an economic hardship for many in our community.
This petition seeks to abolish these bridge tolls, freeing our communities from the economic hardship they have been forced to endure. We ask lawmakers to seek alternative means of revenue that do not disproportionally impact the smaller businesses and everyday residents. Add your signature to put an end to bridge tolls and pave the road towards economic recovery.
