Abolish At-Will Employment

The Issue

I was abruptly terminated from my job after the holidays, without any prior notice, despite being led to believe that there was a possibility of continued employment. This is not just my story; it's the reality for many workers in California due to the current at-will employment law.

At-will employment allows employers to terminate employees at any time for any reason - or for no reason at all - without warning. It's a policy that leaves countless hardworking Californians vulnerable and insecure about their livelihoods.

In 2019, approximately 17.2% of total U.S workforce were residents of California (source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). That's millions potentially living with the uncertainty that they could lose their jobs on a whim.

In fact, according to a study by Rutgers University, nearly one in five workers has lost a job through no fault of their own in the last five years due to company downsizing or restructuring (Farber et al., 2018).

This is not just about me; it's about millions of American workers living under constant threat of sudden unemployment.

It's time we change this unjust system and provide workers with the security they deserve. We are calling on our state legislators to abolish at-will employment in California and replace it with fairer labor laws that protect employees from arbitrary dismissal.
