The additional meeting the council have laid on to accommodate the people unable to attend last week takes place this evening. It would be great if as many people as possible can attend to demostrate, once again, to the Council the importance of this facility to the town. We are their electors, and they will listen as their minds start turning towards re-election. The Council have made some efforts to accommodate potentially larger numbers by switching the venue to St Helen's Church (why they dont use the Abbey Hall itself remains a mystery - perhaps they a hoping for an easier ride inside a church?). Please note they have also changed the time to 7:30pm. These changes have not been well publicised so please share the revised details with any friends who may be planning to attend. On the broader issue, there are now strong rumours circulating as to the nature of the Council's 'once in a generation, exciting plan' for the Abbey Hall. The front runner seems to be the relocation of the library 400 yards as part of the long delayed Charter redevelopment. If this turns out to be true then the key question is will the library scheme include or offer a replacement for the only large central civic space in the town centre. If it does the it could be a positive move, but if not it would represent a net loss of public facilities to the town. Maybe we will hear more this evening.
