Reassess the Marischal Square development.

The Issue

It seems clear to me that the opinion of the people of Aberdeen has not been taken into consideration with the proposed development at Marischal Square.

The £107 million  development will not only obstruct the magnificent views of Marischal College and Provost Skene's House, but, it will also pull yet more shops away form Union Street into another shopping centre. Not to mention years of unsightly construction in the heart of the city and all for the bargain price of £107 million.

In the public consultation the people of Aberdeen made it clear that the height of the building and being able to see the historic architecture currently on site was of up-most importance. Secondly, it was made clear that contemporary glass fronted 'boxes' - of which there are a number of being developed already in the city - were not a preferred style. Both of these concerns have apparently not been taken into consideration with the proposed design.

It is my view that Aberdeen centre would far greater benefit from a green space for people to enjoy rather than another hotel, office and shopping complex. Other cities around the world take great pride in their civic squares and make great use of them - why should Aberdeen be different, It is hard to have pride in a £107 million concrete shopping centre.
