Women's incarceration rates are rising, particularly right here in the United States. There are more than 200,000 women incarcerated in prisons and jails in the United States - an estimated 3% to 5% of them are pregnant. Currently in the United States there are only 9 states that have prison nurseries. It is essential that mothers are able to nurture, care for, and establish a proper bond with their children. These women and babies deserve an opportunity - as advocates of prison nurseries, there is a solid argument that it is better for both the mother and baby to stay together, as opposed to the child being ripped apart from the mothers arm directly after giving birth. These prison nurseries give the mother and child an opportunity to connect. There should be more prison nurseries across the United States so that these women can develop a secure attachment to their babies, being that the first two years of a child's life is the most crucial. Together we can help women and babies across the United States because they too deserve a fighting chance.
