On September 25, 2018 on the ABC News show World News Now, global music group, BTS (방탄소년단 or Bangtan Sonyeondan) was featured in a news segment regarding their speech at the UN General Assembly as global ambassadors for UNICEF. They were the first Korean act to be invited to speak in front of world leaders for the launch of the Generation Unlimted campaign that aims to have every young person across the globe access to education or employment by 2030.

Kendis Gibson, co-anchor of World News Now, reported the story but did so in a demeaning and belittling way. As a clip of BTS’ leader, Kim Namjoon (RM), played on screen, Gibson sneeringly commented that it’s “so poetic” in a sarcastic manner and that he was “seriously in tears.” At the end of the segment, as his female co-anchor attempted to further explain the initiative of Generation Unlimited, Gibson spoke over her by vehemently stating BTS was “just a bunch of boy bands from South Korea.” Gibson gave her no chance to finish the thought. He continued to laughingly dismiss BTS again by repeating, “they’re a boy band from Korea,”- implying the insignificance of BTS.

BTS has an enormous platform worldwide that reaches across all races, age groups, religions and genders and Kendis Gibson was erroneous and beyond disrespectful in his reporting of BTS’ UN GA speech. The fact that he also kept reducing BTS as a boy band from “Korea” clearly projected his own racially-tinged and xenophobic bias against them. This is absolutely unacceptable in today’s modern age where globalization has made embracing other cultures easier and ignorant views such as those shared by Kendis Gibson should be voided. His inappropriate remarks reflect his own intolerance and narrowmindedness and worse of all, he broadcasted them live on national TV. This is the epitome of unprofessionalism.

We now demand a formal and sincere apology from Kendis Gibson. Whether one is a BTS fan or not, what he did was wrong and now he needs to apologize.
