Abbotsford Needs Immediate Investment in Recreation Facilities

The Issue

For years, Abbotsford’s investment in sport and recreation infrastructure has been stagnant.

We have now reached a critical breaking point. Families cannot access life-saving swim lessons. Field and facility limitations are impacting availability and therefore participation opportunities. Teams are refusing to play on our fields due to poor conditions. Athletes are forced to leave Abbotsford to play "home" games or compete in swimming events elsewhere.

Since 2005, Abbotsford has completed countless surveys and studies—all confirming our urgent need for more facilities. Yet, action has been minimal. Compared to neighbouring municipalities like Delta, Langley, and Chilliwack, which face similar ALR and flood mitigation challenges, Abbotsford's recreation facilities fall drastically behind.

This is about more than just youth sports. Recreation drives tourism, supports community wellness, and is essential for a healthy, vibrant city. Abbotsford must start prioritizing recreation—now.

Our Call to Action:

1. Secure land and zoning permissions for a new multi-sport recreation centre immediately.
2. Create a Recreation Advisory Committee that collaborates with Council and reports progress back to the public.
3. Set concrete timelines for projects identified in the Arena, Aquatic, and Sport Field and Court Strategies.
4. Engage directly with every major Sports Club to determine urgent upgrades and development needs for safe, accessible facilities.

For too long, we've been told that recreation isn’t a community priority. This petition is our collective voice. It’s time to demand better.

What We Need From You:

A massive THANK YOU to everyone who attended the City Hall delegation. We felt the support, and we believe because of the presence in that room, City Hall heard us.

*Please do not feel obligated to donate to this petition financially - funds go toward change.org to "boost" the post - by simply sharing with your local friends and family, that may be more impactful! Thank you!
