My aunt was recently involved in an accident. Intubated and unable to advocate for herself, it was imperative that one person be allowed to remain with her. As a nurse practitioner, I think it is of the utmost importance that each patient  who is hospitalized or in a long term facility be allowed one visitor/advocate per day. Each patient deserves the legal right to have advocacy present.

“Isolating hospital patients from their loved ones at their most vulnerable time and place them at risk for medical error, emotional harm, inconsistencies in care, and a greater likelihood of readmission” (Ahearn, Horner, & Mattei, 2019). Families face emotional harm as well when separated from loved ones who are ill. We have learned through research that patients heal quicker with family/advocate involved care.

As many patients in long-term facilities approach end of life, the days and months leading up are precious moments for the patient and his/her loved one. The inability to be present leaves a long-lasting grief for the patient’s loved ones.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has proven, through extensive research,  both screening and requiring masks can significantly decrease the spread of COVID-19. With these regulations in place, allowing each patient an advocate/loved one will not show a significant increase in the spread of the virus. In fact, with education for home care and thus earlier dismissal we may in fact decrease the spread, all while decreasing our health care dollars. Patients and families need legal support for this change to occur.
