A Transportation Access Pilot for Messina College: A Student Proposal to Boston College
A Transportation Access Pilot for Messina College: A Student Proposal to Boston College
The Issue
In our second year, every Messina student is required to complete an internship or clinical rotation for academic credit. Boston College's own parking policy already recognizes exactly this circumstance. It grants overnight resident permits to undergraduates "receiving academic credit required for graduation through a Boston College sponsored field practicum, clinical, or three-credit internship in areas not accessible by public transportation." We meet every element of that standard except one. Our class year. And the class-year rule exists to ration limited garage space on the Chestnut Hill Campus, which is not where we live.
Our campus is different, and the University's own materials say so. BC's Messina website tells prospective students and families that the nearest MBTA station is a twenty-minute walk from the Brookline Campus. The Chestnut Hill Campus sits at a Green Line terminus. The Town of Brookline prohibits overnight street parking anywhere in town, so there is no lawful place to keep a car nearby. These are facts about geography and municipal law, not about anyone's intentions. They are why one University-wide rule fits our campus differently than it fits the Heights.
Our campus is different, and BC's own website says so. It tells prospective families the nearest MBTA station is a twenty-minute walk from the Brookline Campus. The Town of Brookline bans overnight street parking, so there is no lawful alternative nearby.
We are not asking for a space for every student. We are asking Boston College to measure parking use on the Brookline Campus, to confirm which existing exceptions apply to us, and to pilot a small, capped, need-based permit for one year.
