Wow - what a response!
Today we smashed through 1,000 people who agree that we should be able to safely access our national park. This is a fantastic milestone and shows just how strongly the community feels about this issue.
It’s clear that a broad cross-section of our community believes we shouldn’t be cut off from safely accessing one of Sydney’s greatest natural assets - the Royal National Park. Support has come from people of all ages and abilities, as well as visitors who travel here to experience Australia’s first national park for themselves. And it keeps growing. As I send this we're sitting at 1,122 supporters!
Many people have told me they’re amazed there isn’t already a proper crossing here. I completely agree - it’s hard to believe.
When the intersection was upgraded in 2013 to add the southbound traffic lights, the opportunity to include a pedestrian crossing was missed. Even more surprising is that before this upgrade there was actually a concrete path across the median, which was removed during the works and never replaced. Today, people have literally worn a path back through the grass, clearly showing that the demand for a crossing hasn’t gone away.
Now is the time to restore that connection - this time with a proper signalised pedestrian and bike crossing.
I was also lucky enough to chat with Craig Reucassel on ABC Sydney Radio last week. It was a great discussion and I was able to share many of the key points behind the campaign. If you’d like to listen, you can find the interview at the 44:25 mark here.
Even better, that appearance helped spark a conversation with our local MP Maryanne Stuart. We had a constructive phone call where she reiterated her general support for improving access to the park and discussed some of the broader challenges affecting the area. It’s encouraging to have someone who recognises the common-sense nature of this proposal, and I hope she can continue advocating for it with Transport for NSW and in state parliament.
I’ve also recently spoken with the St George and Sutherland Leader, and expect we’ll see an article in the coming week or two. I’ll be sure to share it when it appears.
Thank you again for being part of this campaign. Reaching 1,000 signatures is a huge milestone - but the more support we can demonstrate, the stronger our case becomes. Please keep sharing the petition with friends, neighbours and local groups so we can continue building momentum.
If each supporter shares the petition with just two more people, we’ll quickly move well beyond 1,500 signatures and send an even clearer message that the community wants this simple, sensible improvement. Let's keep going!
