An Urgent Call To Action: Help Save the CR41 Burr Oak Before Council Vote

Dear Community Members,

We’ve received an important update regarding the mature Burr Oak along County rd 41 between McLaughlin and Young. While there’s a temporary reprieve, the outcome is far from decided.

Due to active bird nesting, the tree is protected until August 31st. This gives us a short window of opportunity, but make no mistake, its long-term survival now depends on a council vote.

A staff report will be presented at the May 13th County Council meeting, and it is expected to recommend removal, citing proximity to the roadway with none or limited mitigation options. The only way this tree will be saved is if council members vote in favour of keeping it.

Here’s where you come in:

1. Sign the Petition

If you haven’t already, please add your name in support of preserving this historic Burr Oak. Every signature strengthens the message that this tree matters to our community.

2. Share Widely

Forward the petition to friends, neighbours, and anyone who values our local landscape. Post it on social media. The broader the support, the stronger our voice.

3. Send a letter to Council

Community members can write directly to Council, but timing is critical. Contacts are in the petition under “decision makers”tab.

4. Request to Speak at Council

Community members can present directly to Council as a delegation but timing is critical.

Simply state that you would like to request a delegation to County Council regarding the Burr Oak for the May 13 meeting.

Requests must be submitted immediately, the agenda is being finalized now.

This is a pivotal moment. While the temporary protection offers some relief, it also gives us a narrow window to act. If we want this tree to stand for future generations, we need to show Council that the community stands firmly behind it

Please take a moment today to sign, share, and if you’re able, step forward to speak.

Sincerely,
Andrew Davison
