On January 7, 2025, Ward 1 Alderman Chuck Redpath was appointed to be City Clerk following the resignation of Frank Lesko (who became Sangamon County Recorder). The process to appoint Chuck Redpath was not well communicated to the public, causing confusion and frustration among some Springfield residents.

Because Chuck Redpath is now our City Clerk, his position as Ward 1 Alderman is vacant. To restore and maintain confidence in city government, this petition is requesting that Mayor Misty Buscher lead with a public and transparent appointment process. Mayor Buscher should advertise the vacancy widely on all platforms (radio, newspaper, social media, city website), consider all applicants fairly and transparently, and consult with the full city council in a public forum during a regular committee or council meeting, or during a special council meeting scheduled well enough in advance for all who wish to participate having the ability to do so. 

This petition does not take a position on who should be appointed. We leave that to the mayor to do in accordance with Springfield city ordinances and the advice and consent of the 9 remaining city council members. We believe the above outlined process will provide ample opportunity for the citizens of Ward 1 to participate in choosing who will represent them on the Springfield City Council through 2027.
