Unless you receive a direct from the Curator email with your film named on it, including a reason why thye would like to submit. Don't even think about it. To add to that here are 12 Reasons to be vigilant in 2024!
- Unrealistic Discounts: Be wary of festivals offering exorbitant submission fee discounts, as these can be a tactic to attract more submissions without delivering on promised benefits.
- Lack of Credibility: Check their reputable & track record. Research the festival's history, past editions, and reviews to ensure it's legitimate.
- No Recognition or Awards: Reputable festivals are known for promoting, celebrating and giving physical awards for outstanding filmmaking.
- Hidden Costs: Some festivals may have hidden fees or additional costs that are not initially apparent. Review the terms and conditions.
- Poor Communication: A lack of clear and prompt communication from the festival organizers may indicate unprofessionalism. Legitimate festivals maintain open lines of communication.
- No Clear Selection Criteria: Check their selection process - Don't fall for monthly/bimonthly - If there's a lack of transparency, it might be a red flag.
- Unrealistic Promises: Be cautious if the festival promises distribution deals or guarantees success. Genuine festivals focus on showcasing live, leaving distribution opportunities to industry professionals.
- Limited Audience or Exposure: Evaluate the festival's reach and audience. Some festivals - Especially online or awards festivals - may not provide significant exposure or networking opportunities.
- Unprofessional Website: A poorly designed or outdated festival website might indicate a lack of professionalism. Legitimate festivals invest in a user-friendly online presence.
- Negative Reviews or Experiences: Most filmmakers are so happy to be selected they give great reviews in exchange for nothing other than their money. Check their testimonials - You may find some unhappy bunnies.
- Ambiguous Rights Agreement: Review the festival's rights agreement carefully. Ensure it is fair and clearly outlines how they use your film during and after the event.
- Check Film Communities: Seek advice from fellow filmmakers or film communities. They often share experiences and recommendations, helping you make informed decisions.
Always conduct thorough research before submitting your film to any festival, and remember that reputable festivals prioritize the success and well-being of filmmakers. HAPPY NEW YEAR & GOOD LUCK
