To Premier Ford, Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria, and Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay:

Our dear province of Ontario is a proud citadel of resilience, steeped in history and heritage. A province built by people of every background, working together to achieve something greater.

In recent days, foreign authorities have presumed to unilaterally redact the historic nomenclature of one of our superior Great Lakes: the very water that built our economy, shaped our history, and gave our Great Province its Great Name.

This decree by Sharpie is obviously completely irrelevant in the True North, Strong and Free. However — as proud Ontarians, we are not about to let such petty and puerile performative posturing deny us an excuse to celebrate our own history and geography.

Metrolinx, as you know, is making speedy progress on its latest mass transit line in the City of Toronto, colloquially called the "Ontario Line." Truly a fitting moniker for a train that will connect people across Ontario's capital. But given the events of this past week, We, the Undersigned, believe we can do one better.

In tribute to the waterways that have seen Great Transit since the days of Cabot, Cartier, Champlain — and the First Nations stewards inhabiting the lands before them — we propose but a small, humble modification to the name of this Great Project. Take the title "Ontario Line" — and transition it to the "Lake Ontario Line."

Therefore! There will be no more fitting an appellation to honour the waters that have united so many for centuries. An honourific that no Sharpie scribble can erase from history. A legacy that will outlive the tenure of today's political class — domestic and foreign.
