A petition to end fireworks displays and redirect funding in the City of Whitehorse

The issue

Through this petition, we are urging the City of Whitehorse council to stop spending ratepayer money on fireworks displays. Instead, this funding could be directed towards more sustainable and less harmful alternatives benefiting both residents and local wildlife. Together, let's redefine our traditions in a manner which respects all life and preserves our environment for future generations. Please sign this petition and let the council know our concern and our suggestion for adopting practical, humane, and eco-friendly alternatives.

In recent times, the joyous sound of fireworks hasn't been the same for my children, nor for many others. Last Sunday night especially, we heard birds, pets and bats crying out in distress due to the blast. Hearing animals in distress was so upsetting to the kids. They felt so sorry for the animals and didn't want to go out to try to see the fireworks. Fireworks just don't carry the same meaning for the younger generations as they used to.

As many of us have observed, fireworks cause unnecessary disruption to wildlife and also frighten our beloved pets. The monetary cost is also significant, with funds that could be redirected towards initiatives providing long-lasting benefits for our community.
