Reason for starting this petition: 

As a lot of learner drivers can probably relate to, failing a practical driving test and then being in a situation of real uncertainty and financial strain, not knowing when they will be able to try again, leaving them having to pay for more lessons with no timeframe, pay extortionate amounts for an early test that may not even be legitimate or maybe just give up due to massive lack of motivation based of having no clear goal to work towards while spending a lot of money. In my opinion this is very unnecessary especially if the fail was over an issue which could easily be rectified in a short space of time.

 I realise the system was set out like this for a reason but circumstances have changed so I think the way things are done, as long they can be done safely should also be changed.  

So, I would like to pitch a few ideas to help the current pandemic of driving test shortages which would make all parties happier, the government, learners, instructors and examiners. 

THE MAIN IDEA 

The main idea would be to enable driving instructors to be able to pass students over a certain period of time that would be different for everyone, having goals throughout that time that they must achieve. 

This would mean that instructors would have to be assessed initially and periodically. This can be done the same way current examiners are assessed and although examiners do have to go through their own test, if an instructor where to pass a mock test scenario, e.g. doing a mock test with learner, also with an examiners examiner I hope I would be in agreement of saying they would be trusted to pass a learner based on the current situation of things as I said it might be time for a change. 

Positives

• This would create a better relationship between leaner and instructor in turn making safer roads because let’s be honest a large majority of people will admit they don’t drive the way they did on their test day and that they wouldn’t pass their test if they retried again.
•  Run both systems, running both systems would free up space for the current system while allowing the new system to take place also helping more people who find nerves very difficult, people who learn differently or people who find it very hard to find motivation for something unless they have a clear goal to work towards. 

   

• This would also take the strain of the government and examiners in time once the process is set by solving the driving examiner shortage, just going about it in a slightly different way.
