A petition demanding a congressional investigation of Mylan Pharmaceuticals and its CEO
The Issue
It's amazing how when Turing Pharma CEO Martin Shkreli jacked the price of an AIDS drug, congress had fits, made him testify and then jailed him. But when Mylan CEO Heather Bresch does the same thing, there is silence. Oh wait, the second one's father is US Senator Joe Manchin.
EpiPens are essential products. They save lives and cost just dollars to manufacture.
Yet, since 2007, Mylan Pharmaceuticals has increased EpiPen prices a staggering 461 percent, going from an average wholesale price of $56.64 to $317.82. This not only poses a significant public health threat but demonstrates both a potential monopolization of the product and an apparent ongoing ethical crisis within Mylan and the pharmaceutical industry.
As if this price gouging was not enough, during the period in which EpiPen prices soared, Mylan CEO Heather Bresch's total compensation went from $2,453,456 to $18,931,068, a 671 percent increase. Other Mylan executives also saw significant increases in their salaries. Meanwhile, the salaries of average Americans- the people Mylan and Bresch are extorting- have remained flat. This means that the average American is actually making less when considering escalating living costs.
This is not the first time Bresch, the daughter of US Senator Joe Manchin, and Mylan has been embroiled in scandal. According to Fortune Magazine....
"Critics have called out the company for unusually high executive pay packages, questionable use of company jets, and murky relationships with board members. Then there’s “the Heather Bresch situation,” as she herself calls it, a scandal surrounding her executive MBA credentials—when you Google her name, the episode still ranks even higher than her official Mylan bio."
This from a company that renounced its U.S. citizenship to take advantage of a “tax inversion” loophole. In other words, so it wouldn't have to pay US taxes. Even Senator Manchin has spoken against his daughter, stating that what she did should be illegal. It is simply wrong to permit this company to circumvent laws, play with people's lives, and for Mylan executives to make tens of millions of dollars extorting money via a product that was developed for the U.S. military to treat exposure to nerve agent. In other words, the product was developed using tax dollars.
The arrogance and immorality of Mylan Pharmaceuticals and Heather Bresch must be stopped. It is disgusting and contemptuous given that they are literally playing with lives.
Understanding this, we are calling for a congressional hearing similar to that held for Turing Pharma CEO Martin Shkreli. The fact that Bresch's father is a congressman should play no role in the matter. The signers of this petition expect action.
