The Issue

Recently, UH Mānoa’s Department of Theatre & Dance used AI generated images to promote 5 out of 6 of the shows in the upcoming 2026-27 season. Further investigation revealed that the department’s website also incorporated the use of AI images (see attached). This is sad and disappointing to say the least. The arts and humanities should be a safe haven against AI usage, not an active participant. It is environmentally irresponsible, steals work from real artists, and actively harms indigenous communities.
In addition to the ethical concerns, this reflects poorly on the entire department and will impact the likelihood of people participating in these shows and watching the work of our wonderful, REAL artists. If you are against AI in the Theatre & Dance department now and in the future, please sign this petition.

We—the current students, alumni, and community—WILL NOT STAND for AI usage in the arts. ‘A‘OLE AI!
