A Mother’s Plea: Help Keep My Family Together in Australia

A Mother’s Plea: Help Keep My Family Together in Australia
The issue
From the Heart of a Mother – A Letter to Minister Tony Burke and the Australian People
My name is Sunmi Park, and I am a mother of three children. For 16 years, my husband and I have worked hard, raised our family, and built a life in Australia. This is where our children grew up, where they go to school, and where they have made lifelong friends.
But now, due to a visa issue, we are facing the possibility of having to leave. My children, who know no other home but Australia, may be forced to say goodbye to everything familiar to them.
Our Family’s Life in Australia
- Kumsol (20) is a scholarship-winning nursing student at Deakin University. She has always dreamed of becoming a nurse to serve the Australian community, but she has now been told she must pause her studies due to our visa status.
- Sehun (17) is a dedicated Tae-Kwon-Do athlete who has won multiple medals. He hopes to one day support young athletes in Australia.
- Yesol (11) is in primary school and loves animals. She dreams of becoming a veterinarian. Her school, teachers, and friends mean everything to her, and the thought of leaving them behind is difficult to comprehend.
Why Our Visa Was Refused
Our permanent residency application was refused in 2019 because of a technical issue with proving my full-time work in our small family business.
- There was no wrongdoing or fraud—just a misunderstanding about documentation.
- We provided additional records, but unfortunately, our case was not successful.
- We appealed for three years, but in 2022, the decision was upheld.
After living in Australia for so many years, we are hoping for compassion and fairness so that we can continue our lives here.
Our Contribution to Australia
✅ Caring for elderly parents who are Australian permanent residents
✅ Supporting a sister and niece, who has autism, both Australian citizens
✅ Raising children who are thriving and eager to contribute to Australia’s healthcare and sports industries
Why We Need Your Support
We have made Australia our home, and we want to continue giving back to the community. We are asking for the Minister to consider our case on compassionate and public interest grounds.
If we leave:
💔 Our children will have to leave behind their education, dreams, and friends.
💔 Our elderly parents will lose their primary carers.
💔 A young child with autism will lose the close family support she relies on.
We are not asking for special treatment—only for a chance to continue contributing to the country we love.
Minister Tony Burke, Please Let Us Stay
The Australian government has the power to grant us permanent residency on compassionate groun
ds. Minister Tony Burke, we respectfully ask you to review our case and allow us to remain in Australia.
