The Issue

Nael Shamma has lived in the United States for over 50 years.

He was just a Nine-year-old child when he and his family arrived here, seeking a better life. America is the only home he has ever known. He grew up here. He built his life here. And like so many of us, he believed in the promise of this country.

Nael is the third oldest of seven siblings, the kind of brother everyone depends on — steady, loyal, and always present. He’s a loving husband to Christina, a dedicated father of four, a proud grandfather of two, and a caring uncle to many. He also helps care for his elderly parents, never hesitating to lend his strength where it’s needed most.

Nael is a hardworking man. He wakes up early, goes to work, provides for his family, and tries to live a quiet life of dignity and peace. He’s the kind of person who doesn’t wait to be asked for help — he shows up. Every time. Whether it’s fixing something for a neighbor, helping a family member in need, or simply offering a ride, Nael has always been the first to raise his hand.

He is a proud American, even if the government hasn’t always seen him that way. He pays his taxes. He contributes to his community. He comes home to his two dogs, plays with his grandkids, and tries to be the best man he can be.

And yet, ICE ripped him from his family without warning.

They came to his home — a home he worked hard to earn — and took him away from the people who love and depend on him. There was no crime, no threat, no reason for such cruelty. Just a sudden, violent separation that has left his children, wife, and elderly parents reeling. One moment he was feeding the dogs. The next, he was gone.

This is not justice. This is not how we treat people who have spent their entire lives contributing to this country. Nael is not a flight risk or a danger — he is a normal American man, just like millions of others. A man who works, who helps his family, and who only wishes to live peacefully in the place he has called home for five decades.

We are calling on Governor Gretchen Whitmer, elected officials, and every compassionate citizen to help bring Nael Shamma home. His detention is not only unjust — it is inhumane.

Please sign this petition to demand his immediate release. Let’s show the government that we stand for families, for fairness, and for the true meaning of home.
