A Community That Cares: Petition for a Safe Refuge for Community Cats
The Issue
For as long as we can remember, the streets of Maldives have been home to numerous street cats. Unfortunately, although these streets may be safe for us humans, it is not safe for the cats. Over the years, people have continuously subjected these cats to both physical and mental harm, leaving them helpless on the curb of the pavement. That's why, we at House of Bulhaa wanted to help come up with a solution to this problem. House of Bulhaa was created for an abandoned cat and her family. We took in injured and lost kittens to take care of them, feed them, and to clean them. We created a community for all those who love and care for cats, for everyone who wanted a better life for them. However, this world is cruel, and people are crueler.
HDC received a complaint about the shelter, and we have been asked to take it down. For the cats' safety, we decided to take down the house temporarily, and allowed the cats to roam free, day and night. Unfortunately, this was not entirely safe for them, as we have seen first hand with one of our youngest kittens - Fire, who was barely 3 months old when he was killed. He went missing on the night of 29th June, and was found the next day, dead.
This is the life lived by cats all across Male and Hulhumale. They live in fear, not knowing whether they will survive the night, and we want to help fix this. However, we cannot do this alone. We need the help of the citizens of Maldives, the ones who have witnessed first hand the cruelty that these poor cats are faced with. Compared to many other countries, we don't have many animals that roam our streets, other than the cats that have made a home in our small country. Yet, we are still unable to help these creatures - who live and breathe in the same air we do - live a life that is not shadowed by the constant threat of harm. If you believe in making the streets of the Greater Male Area a safe place for all, please sign this petition. If not for yourself, do it for Fire. 🔥
