A chance Allow pets in all private housing accommodations

The Issue

Finding a suitable home can be challenging, especially when you have a beloved pet as part of your family. As someone who owns a dog and has no children, my canine companion is everything to me. However, finding suitable accommodation where both my pet and I can live comfortably and safely is becoming increasingly difficult. This struggle is faced by many pet owners like me, who are desperate for a warm and welcoming environment where their pets are not just allowed but welcomed.

Many landlords and housing associations do not allow pets or have extremely restrictive policies. According to the Humane Society, 72% of renters who do not own pets would consider having a pet if their housing allowed it, underscoring a massive demand for pet-friendly housing.

Allowing pets in private housing can increase the happiness and comfort of tenants while also expanding the potential tenant pool for landlords. It would help reduce the number of pets surrendered to shelters, where they face the possibility of being euthanized due to space constraints. This change would promote happier, healthier communities and secure housing situations for everyone.

We urge private housing providers to revise their tenancy agreements and consider more pet-friendly policies. Implementing a simple pet-referencing system and setting reasonable criteria for pet ownership instead of outright bans can create a positive and harmonious living environment for all residents.

Your support can drive change. Please sign this petition to call for landlords to make their properties pet-friendly. Together, we can make sure that no one has to choose between a suitable home and their furry family members.
