A Call to End the Feudal Leasehold System and Protect Homeowners from Corrupt Practices
A Call to End the Feudal Leasehold System and Protect Homeowners from Corrupt Practices
The Issue
For decades, senior politicians have either ignored or, in some cases, actively supported the ongoing exploitation of the 5.3 million leaseholders across England and Wales. The Labour government promised to abolish the leasehold system in their current manifesto and we demand they deliver on that pledge.
The time for change is now. We demand that the current government honour its commitment to abolish the leasehold system and put a stop to the exploitation carried out by freeholders for the following reasons:
- It will prevent freeholders from operating their own management and maintenance companies, eliminating the conflicts of interest that allow them to profit at the expense of leaseholders.
- It will give leaseholders more control and transparency over property management and service charges, while prohibiting commissions—some as high as 60%—that freeholders receive from insurance policies.
- It will stop freeholders from withholding service charges for properties they retain within estates and offering arbitrary discounts to selected leaseholders, reducing the potential for corruption within Resident and Leasehold Associations.
- It will end freeholders' unfair practice of charging leaseholders for legal costs they have no involvement in, as well as using the threat of forfeiting our properties to intimidate leaseholders into paying these unjustified costs.
- It will abolish ground rents altogether, freeing leaseholders from this ongoing financial burden and allowing them to have true ownership of their homes.
Together, we can stop this exploitation and ensure that the rights of leaseholders are protected. Stand with us and Free Leaseholders to demand immediate action.
