No More Bitmoji Body-Shaming

The Issue

"If the goal for the app is to create a personalized emoji that looks like the individual using the app, then there should be a more realistic representation of body-type options for plus-size and fat bodies." (Bitmoji Body-Shaming Bull****: A Petition for Bitstrips Inc. to be Body-Positive

Bitmoji is an app used by over 4 million people that allows users to create a personalized emoji of themselves. Most of Bitmoji's users are under the age of 24, primarily teens ages 12-19. The app is directly connected to Snapchat and is accessible anywhere you can chat including other apps like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

The Bitmoji avatar has a variety of options to choose from including different skin tones, jaw lines, and even makeup. The avatar also requires the user to choose a body-type. There are five body type options to choose from. Four out of five of those options are thin bodies leaving only one option for plus-size + fat body types.

Bitstrips Inc. the creator of Bitmoji and Snap Inc. the creators of Snapchat need to take responsibility for the messages that are being sent about plus-size + fat bodies on the Bitmoji app. If the goal for the app is to create a personalized emoji that looks like the individual using the app, then there should be a more realistic representation of body-type options for plus-size + fat bodies. There should also be the same number of options for fat body types as there are thin.

Solution:

This campaign is urging Bitstrips Inc. and Snap Inc. to create three additional plus-size/fat body types for the Bitmoji avatars or adding a slider bar that allows you to adjust the weight of the avatar body. This will give the user a variety of body-types tp choose from; the app will be more body-inclusive, body positive, and to help eliminate body shaming.
