A Call from the Business Community for Humanity and Justice

Entrepreneurship is about contributing to strong, just, tolerant, and diverse communities – both locally and globally.

As entrepreneurs, we are required to make decisions almost daily, often without guarantees and with considerable risk. These choices affect not only our businesses but all stakeholders involved. Bearing that responsibility with integrity is something we strive for every single day – and we expect no less from our politicians and policymakers.

In a time where war, genocide, occupation, and human rights violations are once again taking place unchecked, we cannot remain silent.

Wars are fought between armies. Civilian populations must be protected in accordance with international law. What we are witnessing today, live and in real time, is the deliberate destruction of the Palestinian people.

What deeply concerns us is the alarming tolerance shown by European governments – including the Belgian government – towards Israel’s systematic violations of international law.

Every day that passes without a meaningful response undermines our shared humanity and the very foundations of the international legal order.

By allowing Israel to breach the Geneva Conventions with impunity, we are setting a dangerous precedent: that war crimes will be tolerated if the perpetrator is powerful enough.

We refuse to accept this power-driven logic, and we refuse to stand by in silence. Every act of protest and every voice of condemnation matters.

We see it as our responsibility to speak out publicly, and to encourage others to do the same. Because when injustice becomes systemic, silence becomes complicity.

We want to contribute to a society that:

• Recognises international law as its foundation;
• Protects civilians, even in times of war;
• Does not place economic or religious interests above human rights;
• And has the courage to do what is right – even when it is politically inconvenient.

Therefore, we – entrepreneurs, businesses, and citizens – commit ourselves, through this charter, to the following:

1.We will consciously refrain from doing business with countries, institutions, individuals, and companies that violate international law.

2. We call upon our policymakers to allow members of parliament within their parties to vote freely on binding sanctions against Israel, such as:

•   Broad economic sanctions;
• An embargo on weapons, surveillance equipment, and related technologies;
• A ban on imports from illegal settlements;
• The suspension or termination of cooperation with institutions or companies involved in the occupation or in human rights violations.

3. We speak out. Openly and unequivocally, for as long as human rights are being violated in Gaza.

4. We support international law, including the Geneva Conventions. These exist to protect civilians in times of war. Gross violations must have consequences – diplomatic, legal, and economic.

Ondernemen gaat om bijdragen aan sterke, rechtvaardige, verdraagzame en diverse gemeenschappen – lokaal én wereldwijd. 

Als ondernemers zijn wij genoodzaakt om quasi elke dag keuzes en beslissingen te nemen, zonder garanties en mét risico’s. Deze keuzes impacteren zowel ons bedrijf als alle stakeholders ervan. Het integer dragen van die verantwoordelijkheid is wat wij elke dag nastreven en we verwachten niet minder van onze politici en beleidsmakers.

In een tijd waarin oorlog, genocide, bezetting en schending van de mensenrechten opnieuw ongehinderd plaatsvinden, kunnen we niet zwijgen.

Een oorlog wordt gevoerd tussen legers.  De burgerbevolking dient conform de regels van het internationaal recht beschermd te worden in oorlogssituaties. Waar we evenwel vandaag dagelijks live getuige van zijn, is de doelbewuste vernietiging van het Palestijnse volk.

Wat ons bijzonder zorgen baart, is de verontrustende tolerantie van Europese regeringen – waaronder de Belgische – tegenover de systematische schending van het internationaal recht door Israël.

Elke dag die voorbijgaat zonder betekenisvolle reactie, ondermijnt  onze gedeelde menselijkheid en de fundamenten van het internationaal recht waarop onze wereldorde rust.

Door Israël straffeloos de Conventies van Genève te laten schenden, scheppen we een gevaarlijk precedent: dat oorlogsmisdaden getolereerd worden als de dader maar machtig genoeg is.

Wij weigeren ons neer te leggen bij dat machtsdenken en we weigeren actieloos toe te zien. Elke actie en veroordeling heeft zin.

We zien het als onze verantwoordelijkheid om ons publiekelijk uit te spreken en anderen daartoe aan te moedigen. Want wanneer onrecht systematisch wordt, wordt zwijgen medeplichtigheid.

Wij willen bijdragen aan een samenleving die:

• het internationaal recht als fundament erkent;
• burgers beschermt, ook in tijden van oorlog;
• economische en religieuze belangen niet boven mensenrechten plaatst;
• en de moed heeft om het juiste te doen – ook als het politiek ongemakkelijk is.

Daarom verbinden wij, ondernemers, bedrijven, burgers, ons via dit charter tot het volgende:

1. Wij zullen bewust geen zaken doen met landen, instellingen, personen en bedrijven die het internationaal recht schenden.

2. Wij roepen onze beleidsmakers op om volksvertegenwoordigers binnen hun partij vrij te laten stemmen over bindende sancties tegen Israël, zoals:

• brede economische sancties;
• een embargo op wapens, bewakingsapparatuur en gerelateerde technologie;
• een importban op producten uit illegale nederzettingen;
• het opschorten of beëindigen van samenwerkingen met instellingen of bedrijven die betrokken zijn bij de bezetting of mensenrechtenschendingen

3. Wij spreken ons uit. Openlijk en ondubbelzinnig, zolang de schending van mensenrechten in Gaza doorgaat.

4. Wij steunen het internationaal recht, inclusief de Conventies van Genève. Die zijn er om burgers te beschermen in tijden van oorlog. Het grof negeren ervan moet consequenties hebben – diplomatiek, juridisch  en economisch.

Spreek je mee uit voor menselijkheid en rechtvaardigheid, en onderteken deze charter.

Appel du monde entrepreneurial à l'humanité et à la justice

Entreprendre, c’est contribuer à des communautés fortes, justes, tolérantes et diverses – tant au niveau local qu’au niveau mondial.

En tant qu’entrepreneurs, nous sommes amenés à prendre des décisions presque chaque jour, sans garanties et avec des risques. Ces choix ont un impact non seulement sur nos entreprises, mais aussi sur l’ensemble de nos parties prenantes. Porter cette responsabilité avec intégrité est notre engagement quotidien – et nous n’attendons rien de moins de la part de nos responsables politiques et décideurs publics.

À une époque où la guerre, le génocide, l’occupation et les violations des droits humains se déroulent à nouveau en toute impunité, nous ne pouvons rester silencieux.

Une guerre se livre entre armées. La population civile doit être protégée en toutes circonstances, conformément au droit international humanitaire.

Ce à quoi nous assistons aujourd’hui, chaque jour et en direct, c’est à la destruction délibérée du peuple palestinien.

Ce qui nous inquiète profondément, c’est la tolérance troublante des gouvernements européens – y compris le gouvernement belge – face aux violations systématiques du droit international par l’État d’Israël.

Chaque jour qui passe sans réponse significative affaiblit notre humanité commune et les fondements du droit international sur lesquels repose notre ordre mondial.

En permettant à Israël de violer impunément les Conventions de Genève, nous créons un dangereux précédent : celui où les crimes de guerre sont tolérés lorsque l’auteur est suffisamment puissant.

Nous refusons de nous soumettre à cette logique de domination. Nous refusons de rester les bras croisés. Chaque action, chaque prise de position compte.

Nous considérons qu’il est de notre responsabilité de nous exprimer publiquement, et d’encourager les autres à en faire autant.

Car lorsque l’injustice devient systémique, le silence devient complicité.

Nous souhaitons contribuer à une société qui :

• reconnaît le droit international comme fondement ;
• protège les civils, y compris en temps de guerre ;
• ne place pas les intérêts économiques ou religieux au-dessus des droits humains ;
• et a le courage de faire ce qui est juste – même lorsque cela est politiquement inconfortable.

C’est pourquoi nous, entrepreneurs, entreprises et citoyens, nous engageons, à travers cette charte, à :

1. ne pas faire affaire, en toute conscience, avec des pays, institutions, individus ou entreprises qui violent le droit international ;

2. Nous appelons nos responsables politiques à :

• garantir la liberté de vote des représentants parlementaires de leur parti concernant l’adoption de sanctions contraignantes envers l’État d’Israël, telles que :
• des sanctions économiques générales ;
• un embargo sur les armes, les équipements de surveillance et les technologies connexes ;
• une interdiction d’importer des produits issus des colonies illégales ;
• a suspension ou la fin de toute collaboration avec des institutions ou entreprises impliquées dans l’occupation ou dans des violations des droits humains.

3. Nous nous exprimons. Ouvertement et sans ambiguïté, tant que les violations des droits humains à Gaza se poursuivent.

4. Nous défendons le droit international, y compris les Conventions de Genève, qui existent pour protéger les civils en temps de guerre. Leur violation flagrante doit avoir des conséquences – diplomatiques, juridiques et économiques.
