The Issue

Georgia Students for Reasonable Phone Access

We are a student-led initiative advocating for reasonable changes to Georgia’s school cell phone restrictions.

While we understand the importance of maintaining focused learning environments, we believe students should have reasonable access to their phones during designated non-instructional times, including lunch and approved breaks.

We are particularly concerned about student safety, emergency communication, and disciplinary consequences associated with phone usage outside instructional time.

We believe students should not face unnecessary disciplinary consequences for reasonable phone access during designated non-instructional periods.

We are asking the Georgia General Assembly to reconsider and amend the current legislation by:

Allowing reasonable cell phone access during non-instructional periods.
Reconsidering disciplinary consequences and records associated with phone use during those periods.
Establishing reasonable emergency communication exceptions.
Including students, parents, and educators in discussions about school phone policies.
We recognize the importance of classroom expectations and are not advocating for unrestricted phone use during instruction.

Our goal is to find a reasonable balance between academic success, student safety, and students’ ability to communicate when appropriate.

We believe students and parents deserve a voice in decisions that directly affect their education and everyday school experiences.

We respectfully ask Georgia lawmakers to hear our concerns and consider these proposed changes.

Organized by Georgia Students for Reasonable Phone Access.
