A Call for Change: Protecting Children, Restoring Fairness in Michigan Family Courts

The Issue

I am a father—like so many others across Michigan—who walked into family court believing the truth would be enough. It wasn’t. I’ve lost time with my children, Scarlett Grace and Jaxson Timothy, not because I was unfit, but because the system allowed false claims, biased rulings, and unchecked legal tactics to silence me. Parents without attorneys are treated as irrelevant. Children are removed without evidence. And the lawyers and judges who make those decisions are almost never held accountable. This isn’t just about me—this is happening to thousands of families across our state, quietly, painfully, and without recourse.

If we do nothing, children will continue to be used as leverage. Good parents will be erased by paperwork. False allegations will remain more powerful than verified truth. Families will keep being torn apart—not by danger or abuse, but by a court process that values procedure over people. But if we act, we can build a system that protects what matters most: a child’s right to love and be loved by both parents. We can create a court that listens, that questions, that corrects. The future of thousands of children—and the integrity of our legal system—depends on this.

The damage is already being done—and every day that passes, more families are pulled into a system that fails them. The truth is, this system won’t fix itself. It needs to be called out. It needs to be rebuilt—by the people who have lived its failures. I’m telling my story not for sympathy, but for change. This moment—this petition—is our chance to demand a better future. Not just for my kids. But for yours. For every parent. For every child still waiting to be heard.

                                                Key Demands
We demand immediate legislative action to:

Establish a presumption of 50/50 parenting time unless abuse is proven
Restrict ex parte orders to true emergencies and require prompt review hearings
Support pro per parents with extended deadlines and filing assistance
Mandate follow-up reviews to assess how rulings affect children
Legally recognize parental alienation as a form of abuse and intervene early
Guarantee an evidentiary review before critical hearings to prevent ambush tactics
