Why this petition matters

Started by mai mar

Sabbir Ahmed was a young man of the age of 31 and lived in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A testament to his character is that during our era of global crisis in which unemployment is an increasing social reality and in response to the dependence of his family on himself as the only "breadwinner" while  having to cope with his father's medical bills associated with his critical condition (kidney failure and recovering from the novel coronavirus), Sabbir left his business (and life long passion) to accept an office position to increase their financial security.

On August 31, 2020, Sabbir was clocking off from a long day at the office to attend an invitation sent by the family of his newly engaged fiancé to visit their family home. The family shared with him that they want to their discuss their engagement but when he arrived they informed him that they will no longer allow their daughter, Sonia, to marry him and that they have already arranged Sonia's marriage, to another man. Sabbir was then murdered in the living room of Sonia's home. Sabbir was lit on fire and his wounds eventually ended in a critical manner on September 5th, 2020 leading to his death. The residents of the home in which he was murdered claim that Sabbir killed himself inside their living room when he heard that they would not approve of the love-based relationship between himself and their daughter but it is inhumane and impossible to ignore the many suspicious details that do not coincide with their narrative. For example, when Sabbir's belongings were submitted by Sonia's family to the police as evidence, both his laptop and phone were wiped clean.

The police commanding officer at Shah Ali Police Station (Mirpur 1- thana) are refusing to investigate the case or acknowledge the multiple undeniable and demeaning evidences which emphasize that Sabbir's death was a murder case and not suicide like a smoking gun. In fact, the police statement states Sabbir Ahmed poured gasoline over himself and lit himself on fire to kill himself, yet does not acknowledge many signs of murder (which are abundant and need to be investigated). The C.O., A.B.M. Asaduzzaman, not only refuses to look into any evidence that may suggest it is not a suicide but is also denying any basic pursuit of justice and human rights, at any level.

Please help us bring attention and justice to the death of our brother Sabbir Ahmed by calling- 0171337192 or messaging Dhaka Metropolitan Police - DMP on Facebook and demand for this case to be served. Demand humanity. Demand empathy. We have lost our brother already. Our family feels that we have nothing left to live for ourselves except for our hope in human-kindness and social justice. We will not let this be overlooked.
