Protect the 9th Life Hawaii Sanctuary Cats from Abandonment or Euthanasia

The Issue

9th Life Hawaii is a no kill feline sanctuary and rescue located in Haiku, Maui since 1998. (9thlifehawaii.org). They are also a member of Nathan Winograd's No Kill Network (www.nokillnetwork.org This 2.4 acres houses roughly 300 cats including adoptables, seniors, disabled and ferals. The owner Phyllis Tavares is putting the property up for sale with no plan for the remaining cats.

Due to lack of donations, volunteers and failing health she has made a decision to downsize and relocate without a solution for the cats she won't be taking with her to a smaller property. Many of these cats are ferals in a gulch where the only access is through 9th life property. When the property is sold these cats will no longer get food, water and veterinary care. There are loose dogs, hunters and other risks if the cats wander looking for food. Many of the remaining cats were relinquished by people who were under the impression their animals were going to be “safe” for the remainder of their lives. Some people made large donations to this effect.

It is against the philosophy and charter of this no kill sanctuary to abandon or euthanize these animals. It also violates animal abandonment/cruelty laws of Maui county. We are demanding that Phyllis Tavares who has a responsibility to these animals, her donors and the people who relinquished the cats neither abandon, euthanize nor hire someone to trap and dump these animals.  Please take the time to visit this 7 minute youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGbhhSlxBEk&feature=youtu.be
