8th graders being called last to go down to the bus.
The Issue
For the longest time at Higgins Middle School 8th graders have always been called first to go to the bus. (Then 7th, then 6th). This was so much easier as the eighth graders are on the bottom floor. There were no traffic jams and no one was almost late for the bus. But recently it has been flipped due to our new principal. He said eight graders are leaders and we should lead from the back, sixth graders need to navigate their way through the schools, and the sixth graders will be watching us when we walk out. First I think that calling us leaders is an amazing compliment and I get leading ‘from the back’ but when I walk im not looking at the back I’m looking at the front. The people in the front 99% of the time know what they’re doing. People in the front are most commonly know where or what they are doing. Also if sixth graders get lost they could follow the crowd of 8th and 7th graders. Plus there are many adults in the building who can always help. Even if our principal won’t change this I think it’s important as leaders to express how we feel. I also strongly believe we could set the example if 6th graders are behind us watching us board the bus in a respectful manner. This isn’t disrespectful, it’s showing 6th and 7th graders to speak up when you feel like something isn’t right. That’s what being a leader is…right?
