26th July is recognized as 'International Day for conservation of Mangrove Ecosystem'. But for a Mumbaikar this date holds some really dreadful memories.
On 26th July, 2005, over 1094 people and hundreds of animals and birds lost their lives.
Ever wondered why our entire city was not submerged during floods when the situation became that worse?
The answer lies with the mangrove ecosystem in our city.
Mangroves act as a natural barrier against the rising sea-levels and coastal floodings.
Sadly, they are under threat due to rapid clearances of infrastructure projects to accommodate the rising population in the city and illegal settlements and several other reasons.
From Indian Golden Jackals to Flamingos to the rich marine life, the mangrove is not just a green patch but an ecosystem on which our city is dependent.
Watch this video to understand why we need to actively raise our voice for the mangrove conservation!
