Reinstate a 1-2 hour Book Show hosted by Jenny Crwys-Williams

The Radio 702 Book Show, hosted by Jenny Crwys-Williams, has been a firm favourite with those who love books, reading and writing on Radio 702 for years. Jenny brought her passion for books, her knowledge of authors and the literary scene, her personal experience of writing, and her own inimitable style to our favourite hour or two of the week every Wednesday afternoon.

I would like to petition Radio 702 to reinstate the full Book Show, hosted by Jenny Crwys Williams herself. It needs to be full-length – either an hour on Wednesday afternoons, or perhaps even better, two hours on a Saturday morning. If you are a reader and/or a writer or publisher who has benefitted in any way from the Book Show and Jenny’s parallel efforts to promote reading in this country, I urge you to sign this petition. Let’s show 702 that we love books and we want our proper Book Show back and in the extremely capable hands of Jenny Crwys-Williams!

Over the years, she has interviewed a galaxy of international star authors such as Stephen King, Jodi Picoult, Bill Clinton, Barbara Kingsolver, Lee Childs, Val McDermid, Tan Twan Eng, John Connolly, Jeffrey Deaver, , Rovert Ludlum, Peter James, Alexander McCall Smith, Lionel Shriver, Peter Robinson, Mark Giminez, Michael Robothom and Stuart MacBride, to name but a few.

She has freely given her time and support to local authors such as Mike Nicol, Deon Meyer, Zakes Mda, Margie Orford, Victor Dlamini, Steven and Kate Sidley, Beverley Naidoo, Lauren Beukes, Amanda Coetzee, Margaret Roberts, Noviolet Bulawayo, Eusebius McKaiser, Andre Brink, Henrietta Rose-Innes, Yewande Omotoso, Gus Silber, Gareth Crocker, Marguerite Poland, Herman Mashaba, Sonwabiso Ngcowa, Imraan Coovadia, Alexandra Fuller, Jenny Hobbs, Chris Marais, CM Elliot, Anna Trapido, Jaques Steenkamp, Fiona Snyckers, Sarah Lotz, Louis Greenberg, Sihle Khumalo, Andrew Brown, Jassy Mackenzie, Penny Lorimer, David Klatzow, Justin Bonello, Julian Rademeyer, Mtutuzeli Nyoka, Mandy Wiener and Joanne Macgregor. Forgive me if I’ve skipped your name – there are so many who have benefitted from Jenny’s generosity!

She’s a key draw card to literary festivals such as the Franschhoek Literary Festival and the Kingsmead Book Fair, and now runs her own annual “Bloody Book Week”, bringing crime and thriller writers from here and abroad to magnificent events in Johannesburg.

She helps budding authors, supports the Kids Lit Quiz and even starts libraries in impoverished schools to get children reading.

And all of this activity which promotes a culture of reading in South Africa and, it’s no exaggeration to say, helps keep  the wheels of our literary scene turning, has until now revolved around the 702 Book Show. This show has brought enormous joy and entertainment to the magnificent readers of our country.

However, Jenny’s show has now been cut to a short slot on a Wednesday afternoon and another on Saturday morning. Officially, these are half-hour slots but once time has been taken for news, sports, adverts and promos, the slots wind up being a mere 15-16 minutes. Jenny’s especial genius has always been in letting authors talk without getting in the way. In this way, she elicits in-depth, personal and unique responses. But it’s impossible to get the same quality in a hurried minute or two.

Jenny is also one of the most experienced and accomplished radio hosts in this country and over two decade has proved herself more than capable of hosting her own show. But now she is a guest (hosting guests) on someone else’s show and that format just isn’t ideal.

Show your love and sign up – let’s get our beloved Book Show back!
