6th Grade Participation on District 15 Middle School Track Teams

6th Grade Participation on District 15 Middle School Track Teams
The Issue
With our district’s transition to a middle school model this year, 6th graders were given the opportunity to participate in school sports. One of the key goals of middle school is to provide students with a well-rounded experience, fostering personal growth, teamwork, and school spirit. However, this opportunity has been significantly limited, as very few 6th graders were actually selected for existing teams.
Currently, cross country and wrestling are the only no-cut sports available to 6th graders—both valuable options, but not necessarily ideal for every child. Unfortunately, 6th graders are excluded from middle school track programs, denying them access to a sport that promotes inclusivity, physical fitness, and a strong sense of community. Track and field offers a wide range of events, ensuring that students of all skill levels and abilities can find a place to thrive.
We believe that inclusivity and equal opportunities should be at the heart of our educational mission. Allowing 6th graders to participate in track would provide them with a meaningful athletic experience, foster their social and emotional development, and strengthen their connection to their school community.
We urge our district to expand middle school track programs to include 6th graders, ensuring that all students have the chance to grow, compete, and feel a true sense of belonging.
Please sign this petition in support of giving 6th graders the opportunity to participate in middle school track teams at District 15. Thank you!
