Emma Compton Layne of Cody, a small community in Halifax Co. VA was murdered June 18-2017 and placed in the woods 200-300 feet from the property line owned by Emma & her estranged husband Russell Wayne Layne on property owned by another person. On Monday 06-19-2017, Emma never showed up at Cody Store the store she owned & operated, neither was she answering any telephone calls. The oldest sibling of the 4 Compton children was contacted to go check on Emma. Upon arriving Emma’s car was in the usual parking place, Emma’s dog Lady Bug was in the house, Emma’s purse, cash, store deposits, computers, credit cards & cell phone were in the home, Everything but Emma. The sibling refused to call HCSD that Monday so a call was placed Tuesday morning 06-20-2017 from MS and reported Emma couldn’t be located. A local Search & Rescue was called in, but on the 1st day one of the Volunteers had a heart attack & passed away & all searches were called off. Other Professional Search & Rescue waited for an invite from HCSD(the only way they could come in) but the Captain of Investigators at the time refused any outside help. The investigation was botched from Day 1 due to false leads and false information about Emma. On 11-22-2017 2 hunters came across Emma’s Remains. They were sent to the Medical Examiners Office in Richmond, VA. Emma was positively identified and cause of death was ruled Traumatic Neck Injury causing death; her case then became a homicide investigation. After 8 months her home was searched and as expected any evidence that may have been there was long gone. Investigators refused to listen to the facts that Emma would never just walk away from our Mother who was in the hospital, her store, her family. To this day even though there are suspects, LE has not officially named a suspect or a person of interest. There are Murder cases being tried that are 1 & 2 years old, even as little as 6 months old in the Courts of Halifax County.  Emma’s Case should have been in the courts by now. The CWA is refusing to reach out to the Attorney Generals Office and ask for help.
