Justice for Victims of Abuse in 3HO/Sikh Dharma/Kundalini Yoga Community

The Issue

As you are likely aware, in addition to the three lawsuits against Yogi Bhajan in the 1980s by three women who he sexually abused, within the last year, there have been more reports from a number of former students, employees and followers of Yogi Bhajan that he physically, sexually, psychologically, financially, and spiritually abused them.

We, the undersigned current and former students of KRI/IKYTA/3HO, MPA, and/or consumers of Yogi Tea products and/or other SSSC owned or operated products and services, and their affiliates, are concerned about the ongoing promotion of these products and services in the face of these reports coming out.

It is painful for the survivors of his abuse and for survivors of abuse in general to witness how perpetrators continue to be revered and promoted, while those brave enough to come forward with the truth are often ignored, dismissed, slandered, and subjected to character assault such as being labelled dishonest, immoral, or of poor character, when in fact, members of the corporations were known to be involved in criminal activity.  Court documents are available through internet searches.

The report by the independent investigative organization, "An Olive Branch," found that these crimes of abuse and assault very likely occurred.  The report can be viewed here, but please note that the reports of the actual abuse begin halfway thorugh the document, on page 35:

In light of this report, we request that you do the following:

a) include a statement acknowledging this on any product packaging, and condemn the mistreatment of any and all survivors of abuse by Bhajan and/or his enablers, and/or any employees or business associates of these named corporations and insitutions and any others affiliated and as yet unnamed here.

b) include a statement acknowledging the courage of the survivors who have come forward, and create a fund for psychotherapy for both those survivors of direct abuse and for those who experienced abuse at the hands of others within the toxic culture that was created by Bhajan and his enablers.

c) make a formal statement of apology to the many former students, staff members, and community members who attempted to address the corruption and abuse, over the years and when they did, were met with dismissal, denial, threats and ostracization, and thereafter were subjected to character assault and labelled dishonest or immoral, when in fact they were standing for justice and attempting to correct wrongs.

d) create a fund in the name of the survivors of this abuse and exploitation in these organizations. Make the funds available for *ongoing* therapy for direct survivors of abuse by Bhajan and for any survivors who experienced abuse at the hands of any of his employees or business associates.  If need be, liquidating assets in order to do so.

e) reimbursement of coerced financial contributions such as individuals' family inheritances, that were taken by Bhajan and subsumed into SSSC assets and holdings, liquidating said assets in order to do so if need be

f) adequate financial compensation to former employees or students, who, through their generosity of service or seva, their labour was exploited, liquidating assets in order to do so if need be, and

g) financial compensation to any first or second generation survivors of neglect, such as any students who were seriously injured as a result of inadequate care and  supervision, and had medical care withheld, to their detriment, liquidating assets in order to do so if need be.

We additionally request:

A) A formal apology by any and all staff members who, intentionally or unintentionally enabled this abuse to occur, and did not act in a manner that would have prevented such harms

B) A thorough review and investigation into the reported incidents of abuse by any teachers or staff members affiliated with these organizations. Certain individual teachers have been named by many as having committed crimes and/or abuses, and having had a detrimental effect upon their students and/or organizational cultures. We ask that you hear our concerns and assist us in calling these individuals to account, and ensure that these individuals will have their licenses revoked and not be permitted to adversely affect any current or future students

C) A thorough revision of any and all published materials to include the reports and lawsuits from the 1980s up to and including now, to either remove or formally contextualize and and analyse (from an anti-oppressive, feminist and social justice perspective) the content, and provide clear articulation of how the structures are creating needed change.  Ensuring that all stakeholders are made aware of these intentions, and creating and releasing a reasonable timeline of meeting these respective goals, and staying in open communication with victims, students, employees and all stakeholders regarding this

D) The formation (or reconfiguration) of a formal ethics review panel and the appointing of a task force to ensure that no such crimes will occur again in the future. Working from a trauma-informed perspective to create a culture of transparancy and accountability within the organizations that specifically monitor or assess for, and develop an action and safety plan to prevent the harmful impacts of unchecked sociopathy and malignant narcissism in those in positions of power, and how this shows up in organizational structures

-Creating a review panel of consultants who assist organizations in addressing and remediating workplace violence. Ensuring that the experts and/or consultants are accredited and credentialed professionals of diverse backgrounds who are skilled in human systems and informed by feminist, decolonial, and anti-racist, anti-oppressive, pro-diversity orientations who can assist in ensuring safety, equality, and justice for students and staff

-Remediating the hierarchical system of power imbalances and inequities built into the organizational structures, to ensure equality amongst members, and a system by which teachers are accountable to students, and can learn from students as much as students from teachers

-Working with students to create a system of checking in on key points pertaining to areas in which harms occurred

-Creating curricula on justice issues in yoga and spiritual commuities, curricula on addressing interpersonal violence, identifying and responding appropriately to narcissistic abuse, DARVO, etc, and creating stronger systems of support and safety for students and employees to hold leaders to account, and

-Liaising with organizations such as #NotMe to ensure prevention and reporting of any concerns or offences.

***UPDATE***It should be noted that after posting a link to the AOB Report that this writer obtained from the 3HO website, within a few hours, the link had been hacked and switched to a Russian escort and porn site.  This was extremely quick work, by someone who either had or guessed the server password. This kind of thing is a perfect example of the sickness and corruption that has infected the community.  There have been deeply misogynistic elements to "the teachings" in many ways, and certainly in the behaviour of Bhajan and several of his associates.  We can clearly see how this unfortunately overshadows some of the more positive and benign aspects of the community.

Also I have edited this petition to remove the request for reimbursement of tuitions and books. There may be a separate petition put together in the future by students who, understandably, feel as though they are now unable to utilize their trainings in "Kundalini As Taught By Yogi Bhajan" (TM), who have invested consideranble sums of money in their trainings, and feel as though their trust in the institutions of 3HO and KRI, and merit of "the teachings" has been broken.
